David Martin Memorial Race Filled with Clean Sweep Events
By Vikki Higginbotham
June 13, 2014 – Friday night was not a typical night for the drivers at Electric City Speedway. Superstitions aside for Friday the 13th had drivers fighting to take home the first David Martin Memorial Race trophy. At the start of the night brothers Pacer and Curt Popham pulled out onto the front stretch carrying checkered flags. They proceeded to run a couple of laps in honor of Martin.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks had Troy Weninger starting the evening with a victory in the heat race. In the feature, Weninger worked up through five caution flags to sweep his night of racing and take home the beautiful trophy provided by the Martin Family.
Two heats greeted the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Kory Wermling and Jerry Sangrey Jr. were the victorious ones. There was some excitement in the feature when Sangrey took a couple of hard hits to his rear bumper causing it to fall off. Tommy Bush did not see the offending debris and ran over the top of it and suffered severe damage to the underside of his car. As part of the official WISSOTA rules Sangrey was parked for the night. Without the rear bumper the safety to the driver becomes a little more high risk as they are used to protect the fuel cell. Making his way to the front early Wermling wheeled his car to his third victory of 2014.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks had Casey Steffenson winning heat one and Pacer Popham taking heat two. Due to mechanical issued in the heat Cody Ryan made an attempt to take his out for the feature but was unable to complete the start. Ryan was losing oil all over the place. Fred Hansen was the only caution in the event when he spun on the front stretch. Casey Steffenson worked his way through the field to round out his sweeping events.
The IMCA Modifieds came out in a single heat. After getting spun on the back stretch by John Price, Gary Hill had to battle his way up to Mark Wermling. However, Wermling was too strong and took the heat victory. A caution free and fast paced feature greeted the fans. Wermling came out of the shoot strong and never looked back. Joey Price and Gary Hill battled for second. Wermling claimed his second victory of the season.
UPCOMING EVENTS: This week on Friday and Saturday Night starting at 7:30 ASCS Frontier Region Sprint Car action with all four regular classes running.
