By Vikki Higginbotham
The 2013 racing in Great Falls, Montana is officially underway with a double header event at Electric City Speedway this past Friday and Saturday night. The WISSOTA Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks and Modifieds were on hand for both nights.
Starting the evening off Friday the WISSOTA Street Stocks ran two heats. With only a single spin in the first heat they successfully put their first race in the books. Familiar faces Cody Ryan and Ron Mattern took the top spot in the heats. The feature held a little more excitement as Ryan led for two thirds of it but had to pull off due to a broken axle. Mattern took over but a self inflicted spin put him to the back of the pack for a restart. Donavon Sorenson captured the first WISSOTA Street Stock feature of the season.
Saturday didn’t fare well for Sorenson, however. Sorenson’s night ended with a hard impact to the front stretch wall. Weninger was sent to the back of the pack for the restart but managed to work his way back up for the win. Mattern held off Ryan for the other heat victory. The feature was the polar opposite of the previous night. In a caution free event Weninger became the second feature winner for the class.
Some great excitement occurred in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds over the weekend. Starting with Friday night Marty Harvie took the first heat to a caution free close. Paul Leach led his heat to victory with only a single caution. The third heat had Michael Price connecting his right front with the front stretch wall and causing severe damage to the car. Kory “The Flying Werm” Wermling, in his first start as a Midwest Modified, led the third and final heat to the checkers. After two jumped starts that had pole sitter Marty Harvie losing two starting positions, Wermling was positioned on the pole for the start of the event. Kory kept the field behind him through a few cautions, but in a final green-white-checkered run for the win, Paul Leach took the opening Wermling left for him and pulled away with the victory. Wermling finished second.
The second night for the Midwest Modifieds ran a little smoother. Marty Harvie and Greg Tacke captured the heat wins. The feature held a lot of position swapping and found Wermling in victory lane with his first of what may be many wins.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks had a terrific heat race on Friday night as Pat LaMere and Casey Steffenson battled for the race lead. LaMere crossed the finish line ahead of Steffenson. In the feature Steffenson made his way to the front. Jake Tucker found his way up to Steffenson and in a close finish settled for second place for the first feature of the season. Steffenson captured his first feature of 2013.
Saturday held a little heartbreak for Dolan Sevalstad. As the field was coming to the white flag mechanical issues brought out the caution and Sevalstad’s night was over. Steffenson claimed the heat victory. Wade Johnson brought out the two cautions in the feature for spins. Steffenson swept the features for the 2013 Montana Spring Roundup.
The final class to run Friday night was the WISSOTA Modifieds. In two caution free heats Gary Hill and Paul Leach led their fields to the finish line. The feature had Mark Wermling and Paul Leach working their way around Jody Kropp to battle for the lead. In the final laps Leach held Wermling off for his second feature victory of the night.
Saturday night’s heats didn’t go as flawlessly as the previous night. Heat one found Jody Kropp as the victor after three cautions. Mark Wermling took the second heat. A spin in turn 4 involving John Price collected Chad Johnson and Kelly Blixt. Wermling was sent to the back of the field. Though he led a few laps, Leach was unable to hold off Gary Hill and get his second Modified feature win for the season. Hill worked his way around Leach in the closing laps and claimed the feature victory.
Next week: Electric City Speedway is bringing the WISSOTA Late Models to town. Racing starting at 7:30 Friday, May 3, 2013

When we first began operating our track in 1990 we took over from the previous management and followed their plan of running on Friday night. Friday had been the night for Great Falls for a long time. In 1999 there were two neighboring tracks running on Friday night, the new Belgrade track and the then new track at Cut Bank, so we moved to Saturday night. Now with Cut Bank closed and BMP in Billings up and going strong, it is a good time for Great Falls to set Friday as our primary race night. Change is never easy, but we have some good reasons for making this change. This was not a hurried decision and it is one that we have thought long and hard about. We are very concerned about our life with our family and since we now have 13, going on 14 grandchildren we want to spend some quality weekend time with our children’s families. And try as we might, all of our grandchildren are not race fans. We hope all of our fans, workers and racers can make this change with us and can also enjoy these great Montana summers. Thank you for understanding! Dan and Barbara Mann and Family

Electric City Speedway Wraps Up 2012 with the 19TH Annual MT Round Up By Vikki Higginbotham Friday, August 31, 2012 was the beginning to the end of the 2012 racing season at Electric City Speedway. The 19th Annual Montana Round Up was set to begin with the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Late Models and Big Sky Sprints. Drivers and fans from all over the northwest and Canada were anxious for the weekend of action packed racing to begin. With track championships scheduled for Saturday evening the points race in the WISSOTA Street Stocks as Marvin Gonzales was sitting only eleven points ahead of Troy Weninger. Being in separate heats Gonzales and Weninger took the opportunity to try to spread out the deficit. However, both drivers took the top spot and neither was able to gain ground. While running in a pack Gonzales attempted to give Ron Mattern a push down the backstretch. Be it chance or a fluke Mattern spun in front of the field and Gonzales was sent to the back of the pack for the restart. With this new development in the chase for points Weninger capitalized with a feature win. Gonzales wound up finishing eleventh. What did this do to the points going into the final night? Fans would be treated with an epic battle between Gonzales and Weninger the following day as the eleven point feature difference tied the drivers up at the end of the evening. The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were set to run with Doug LaPierre having a comfortable lead over his fellow competitors. Having to make a start in order to secure the championship, LaPierre captured the second heat victory. Patrick and Marty Harvie claimed the other two heats. Missing from the lineup was second place driver Zach Olson. LaPierre wasn’t going to leave anything to chance though. In the feature, LaPierre captured his final victory of 2012. Back for a second week the WISSOTA Late Models ran third in the cycle of events. Rory Minster and Mark Fowler II grasped the heats. With a few additional drivers making the drive down from our neighbors to the north the feature held thirteen drivers racing for the right to claim the victor. An incident that had Chris Dunn into the outside wall of turn four was the only caution of the feature. Rock Degele added another feature to his list of victories. Finally the Big Sky Sprints were able to take their turn on the track. Twenty-two drivers arrived at the track to see who would be the top dog of this Labor Day Weekend. Brock Lemley, driving once again for Peterson Racing, took the first heat. Joe Ramaker claimed the second heat with Trever Kirkland coming out on top of the third. Through multiple cautions Lemley gained the lead and ticked off the laps. In front of the ever growing crowd of fans, Lemley earned his fifth of seven possible victories this season.
By Vikki Higginbotham

Friday, August 31, 2012 was the beginning to the end of the 2012 racing season at Electric City Speedway.

A full to overflowing event was scheduled for Saturday, September 01, 2012 as the WISSOTA Super Stocks and Modifieds joined the previous night’s classes for the final night of 2012 racing at the speedway. With championships to be decided 94 drivers packed both the infield and outer pit areas. Having all six available classes on the card the fans flooded into the grandstands to see who would claim bragging rights in the off season.

Starting the evening off the WISSOTA Street Stocks had championship contenders starting in separate heats. Marvin Gonzales set the bar for Troy Weninger with the victory in the first heat. With nothing to gain and a few points to lose Weninger met the challenge with a victory of his own in heat two keeping the points race at a tied battle going into the feature. The luck of the draw had Gonzales starting in the third position and Weninger in sixth. In true champion form both drivers dug in and battled lap after lap for position. Side by side throughout most of the event, they kept fans in a guessing game each time they crossed the start/finish line. Brad Norris and Warren Samoy were also running in the front of the field throughout the event. Norris crossed the checkered flag ahead of Samoy for the victory and Gonzales squeezed in a third place finish just ahead of Weninger. As Norris went to take the trophy for the win Gonzales was finally able to relax and celebrate his 1 point Championship victory over Weninger. Ron Mattern squeezed Rookie Cody Ryan out of third by two points.

Though not as close as the Street Stock points battle the WISSOTA Super Stocks had Curt Popham needing to start the heats in order to claim his 2012 track championship. Rock Degele claimed the first heat in which Popham finished fourth. Second place points contender Pat LaMere gained a little ground on the 40 point deficit he had to Popham with a heat two victory. Rock Degele proved strong in his Super Stock as he claimed the feature victory. Curt Popham procured his right to claim 2012 Track Champion with a 35 point lead over LaMere. Jake Tucker settled for third in the season overall three points behind LaMere.

With the arrival of two additional drivers the WISSOTA Late Models were third to run for a second night in a row. Kelly Hample and Rock Degele took the heat wins. In a single caution feature event Hample was back in victory lane after engine trouble took him out of the previous week’s event and kept him from making Friday’s race.

Up next were the Big Sky Sprints. Though a few cars fell out after Friday’s event twenty cars were on hand for the final 2012 Sprint event at the track. Kelly Miller, Kyle Bates and Brock Lemley were victorious in the heats. With another weekend sweep Lemley found himself in victory lane in front of not only the wonderful fans but family that made the trip from Demming, Washington.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds followed the Sprints for the evening. Tim McCune, Marty Harvie and Jerry Sangrey Jr. were the heat winners. With the stroke of midnight minutes away 19 of 21 drivers took the green flag for the feature. Marty Harvie made his way from third to first in no time and claimed the victory. Doug LaPierre became the 2012 Track Champion. Chris Hill and Ron Sasek took second and third respectively. With Zach Olson’s absence this past weekend he slipped from second in points to fifth as Jake Tacke secured fourth.

The final class to run was the WISSOTA Modifieds. Chad Johnson and Paul Leach were the heat victors. After over 7 hours of racing track conditions were optimal for Leach. Starting on the pole he shot out at the start and there was no looking back. Jerry Baertsch said after the event that once Leach got around him, putting him a lap down, he expected the rest of the field right away, but it had taken a little time for them to get to him. On the final lap Joey Price had made progress and was right behind Leach when the final flag flew on the 2012 season. Gary Hill finished the feature in fifth place, but claimed the Track Championship for the season with an 85 point lead over Maurice Myre. John Price closed out his season with a third place points finish.

See everyone next season!

The WISSOTA Street Stocks found a few different names out on top at the end of the heats. Michael Price, Kory Wermling and Taylor Martin were the victors. In the feature, Martin didn’t fare as well and was the first car out of the event. Cody Ryan had a double run of bad luck as he ran his event. After finding himself up on the tires in turn four Ryan made his way back onto the track with the help of Carl’s Exxon’s wrecker. After a few laps he had to pull in with engine troubles. Starting from the eighth position, Marvin Gonzales found his way to the front and to his third victory in a row. Chuck Fleming and Pacer Popham took the WISSOTA Super Stock heats. After a spin in turn two on the initial start the drivers got into a rhythm of racing with Jake Tucker out in front. A caution flew for Dolan Sevalstad losing a spring as he was attempting to get off the track in the turn one upper pit entrance. Curt Popham used the restart to his advantage and made his way around Tucker. Curt wasn’t in the clear for a victory though. His brother Pacer was closing in quickly. As the brothers were coming to the white flag side by side, Pacer made his move and the victory was his. The WISSOTA Late Models had a little excitement in their second of two heats as JD Olsen went up on the backstretch wall and rode it most of the way down. The height of the wall helped prevent Olsen from rolling completely over, but his car suffered major damage to the right side. Kelly Hample and Jody Kropp were the heat winners. With the help of a few of his competitors, family and other racers Olsen was back out for the feature event. Starting from the pole position, Dave Freeman took the cautions in stride. Leading the entire event Freeman captured the victory. Speedway fans were thrilled to see the 11x back in victory lane. The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds finished off the evening with Zach Olson, Doug LaPierre and Paul Leach as heat victors. The first caution of the feature had LaPierre restarting in the back of the field of seventeen. Zack Olson battled with Chris Hill and Tim McCune for the lead in the early laps. After making his way to the front Olson was unstoppable. As Olson was collecting the checkered flag for his parade lap LaPierre pulled up beside him to give his congratulations.
By Vikki Higginbotham Saturday night at the speedway had a few extra drivers in attendance as it was the WISSOTA/Amsoil Qualifier events in the Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds. Winners of the feature events are given the opportunity to run the Race of Champions race at the WISSOTA 100 in Huron, South Dakota in mid-September. First up for the evening were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Three heats ran caution free as Patrick Harvie, Jerry Sangrey Jr., and Doug LaPierre captured the top spots. The feature held heartbreak for Mike Pistelak when he lost on engine entering turn one and caught fire on the backstretch resulting in a red flag for the field. Chris Hill also had engine troubles as Doug LaPierre was taking the white flag. For another night this season LaPierre stood victorious. Curt Popham took the first of two heats in the WISSOTA Super Stocks. The second heat was restarted after track officials didn’t like the initial start. Rich Wermling had mechanical issues that had him out of the heat early. Ty Clemens won the second heat. After three cautions for spins in the feature the yellow and black were displayed informing drivers any more cautions and the person responsible would be watching the end of the race from the pits. Curt Popham had a spin in turn two and had to watch his brother Pacer take another checkered flag this season. Gary Hill had engine trouble in the first heat for the WISSOTA Modifieds while Mark Wermling was victorious. Dave Azure took the second heat. A spin by Sean Higginbotham on the start of the feature brought out the first caution. Higginbotham’s luck turned south a couple laps later when something broke sending him into the backstretch wall and ending his evening in the back of the wrecker. Another caution flew bringing out the yellow and black warning. Sean McBee and Maurice Myre were both sent to the pit area for causing two separate incidents. The final restart resulted in a Green-White-Checkered finish and Mark Wermling brought home the victory ahead of Dave Azure and John Price. Cody Ryan and Marvin Gonzales won in their respective heats for the WISSOTA Street Stocks. During the feature Bill Handel was victim to a huge pileup coming out of turn four. Proving strong this week, Troy Weninger brought his #20 to victory lane in a close final lap battle with Cody Ryan. Point leader Marvin Gonzales lost some of his points lead to Weninger after having difficulties in the event. Next week: The regular classes of WISSOTA Street Stock, Midwest Modified, Super Stock and Modified will take to the track. Quigley’s North American Sprint Tour returns to Great Falls on August 15, 2012 and August 18, 2012. The Street Stocks and Supers will be in attendance both nights and Modifieds are set to join them on the 18th. Go to www.electriccityspeedway.com for details on tickets. RESULTS WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds Heat #1 – Patrick Harvie, Ron...

In racing action the WISSOTA Street Stocks Jeff Sekuterski, Kyle Jarvey, and Marvin Gonzales were victorious in the heats. After three cautions flew in the feature the Yellow and Black flags were displayed to the field informing the drivers that any further cautions would have the person who caused it sent to the pits. Cody Ryan worked his way to the front of the field and started pulling away, but after driving it into the corner a little too hard Ryan spun with four laps to go. The caution flew after a melee occurred when the pack caught up with him. Ryan’s car suffered some damage and he was done for the night. Three more cautions flew before Marvin Gonzales brought his car to victory. Jerry Martin, Paul Leach, and Doug LaPierre captured the heats in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. During a racing incident in the feature Patrick Harvie rolled into the back infield pit lane bringing the red flag out. After a close inspection by tech officials Harvie returned to the track to finish eleventh of nineteen. The Yellow/Black flew for the Midwest Modifieds as well and a few drivers were sent to the pits after causing a restart. Making his way to the front of the pack, Doug LaPierre captured his fifth victory of 2012. Pacer Popham swept the heat and feature in the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Pat LaMere suffered damage in the first caution of the feature and after the restart had to pull off. Losing a drive shaft seems to be the ongoing battle with the WISSOTA Modifieds this season. Maurice Myre was victim to the drive shaft issue in the second heat. Jody Kropp took the first heat with Chad Johnson victorious in the second. At the start of the feature Kropp lost his drive shaft ending his bid for a win. The Yellow/Black rule came into effect in the event and Johnson, Jesse Baertsch and Sean Higginbotham were sent out after their spins in turns three and four. The final lap of the feature had leader Mark Wermling suffering damage when attempting to pass Pat Wallace on the back stretch. Though Wermling held on through turn four, Hill reached the finish line ahead of him. Wermling managed to get a second place finish.
Chris Gets It Dunn at Electric City Speedway By Vikki Higginbotham Christmas? In July? That is what fans and drivers were asking themselves Saturday night at Electric City Speedway. Ninety-two degree temperatures did not deter this season’s celebration of “Christmas in July” as the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Late Models and Super Stocks took to the track in Great Falls, Montana. Three caution free heats of WISSOTA Street Stocks started the evening off. Marvin Gonzales, Kyle Jarvey and Stephan Foley collected the victories. The feature however, had multiple attempts at a start and had to be shortened due to time constraints. Once the event got started Nick Hunter made his way to the front of the field. After being sent to the rear of the 17 car field Troy Weninger worked his way up to battle for the lead with Marvin Gonzales setting up for a bid as well. Hunter didn’t want to see the late race caution that flew allowing Gonzales and Weninger to restart directly behind him for the Green-White-Checkered finish. In a three wide battle on the final lap Gonzales managed to clear Hunter for the victory and Weninger was scored third. Mike Pistelak, Aaron Liscum, and Paul Leach claimed the heat victories for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. The 20 car feature had Pistelak and Jerry Sangrey Jr. battling in the early laps. When the caution flew on lap 6 Pistelak was scored as the leader. Paul Leach worked his way to the lead. Pistelak and Sangrey settled into a battle for seconds. An incident involving Pistelak and Sangrey brought out a caution. A few laps after the restart Sangrey slowed on the front stretch. When the caution flew Alan Riley spun into the rear of Sangrey and the field was stopped on the backstretch to allow for track crews to assist Riley off the track. Zach Olson had worked his way through the wrecks and field of cars to restart behind Leach for another Green-White-Checkered finish. Olson just couldn’t get around Leach and went home with a second place finish. Back after a month off of racing the WISSOTA Late Models took to the track third. Chad Johnson and Rock Degele were the heat winners. In what one could call a “Christmas Wish Come True” Chris Dunn took off at the start of the feature and was gaining some distance from the battle for second place. A couple of cautions found Kelly Hample sitting in the second position behind Dunn. The final two laps had fans out of their seats as Hample made it a side by side battle with Dunn. Coming off of turn four Dunn and Hample went all out for the checkered flag. In his 52nd start as a Late Model driver, Dunn successfully beat Hample by 0.038 of a second gaining his first career victory in the class.
The first heat of WISSOTA Super Stocks had Rowdy Gillen and Curt Popham swapping cautions and both drivers were sent to the pits after their second one. Pat LaMere took the top spot in the heat. Jake Tucker dominated heat two. The start of the feature had the father and son duo of Rich and Alex Wermling running side by side. Rich maneuvered his car past that of his son and began pulling away from the field. An incident involving Curt Popham and Casey Steffenson had Steffenson being sent to the pits as this was the second caused by the driver in the same event. Rich continued his lead as Alex held off the field after the restart. Rich was unstoppable during the event and Alex held on for a second place finish.

By Vikki Higginbotham A busy week just transpired at Electric City Speedway as they hosted two events. Wednesday, July 11, 2012 had the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds joining the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series. Saturday, July 14, 2012 the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks and Modifieds took to the track for their regularly scheduled event. The Wednesday event had sixteen Midwest Modifieds set to battle for the feature win. In the two heat events Zach Olson and Mike Pistelak were victorious. The feature event had Jerry Sangrey Jr., Chris Hill, and Mike Pistelak battling the laps and each other to determine the winner. In the final laps Pistelak crossed the checkers with Hill and Sangrey Jr. finishing second and third. Zach Olson, coming off of a feature win at BMP Speedway, finished in the fourth position. Brock Lemley captured his first National ASCS Feature win in front of the hometown crowd of car owners Richie and Nubby Peterson. After over a week of extreme temperatures Saturday’s forecast was rather bleak to get racing in. Keeping an eye on the weather drivers, fans and track officials were set for a full night of racing. Starting the evening off the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds took to the track in three heats. Dave McCune, Jerry Sangrey Jr. and Paul Leach captured the top spot in their respective races. The feature event was red flagged in the late laps due to Jake Tucker scattering fluid and rear end parts across the backstretch. After the track was cleared Doug LaPierre kept Paul Leach behind him to claim his fourth victory this season. The WISSOTA Super Stocks gained another entry as Rich Wermling joined his son Alex on the track. In the heat Curt Popham led the field across the finish line. The feature had the cars of brothers Curt and Pacer Popham in the front once again. At the end of twenty-five laps Pacer defeated his brother. Jody Kropp and Maurice Myre grabbed heat victories in the WISSOTA Modifieds. Paul Leach, who was driving a perfect race in his heat, lost a driveline and was out for the night. The beginning of the feature had drivers colliding in turn two. Jody Kropp took the brunt of the damage and was unable to continue. The final laps held great racing as Maurice Myre and Gary Hill ran side by side in their quest for the lead. At the white flag they were within a few feet of each other. Myre managed to hold off Hill in a close finish. A tight points battle has developed in the WISSOTA Street Stocks between Marvin Gonzales, Troy Weninger, and Cody Ryan. The first heat had these drivers running together. Gonzales finished the heat ahead of Ryan and Weninger adding to his lead in the standings. Ron Mattern took the second heat.
