An action packed night was in store for fans Friday as drivers from all over arrived to battle for the chance to race in the AMSOIL Race of Champions event to be held at the WISSOTA 100 in September. Mother Nature was on the horizon threatening to delay the event, but by the time the storm reached the track there were just a few sprinkles.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks ran two heats with Troy Weninger and Brice Miesmer grabbing the victories. The feature had Frank Pearson out to an early lead. Miesmer kept with him and took the lead near the halfway point. Taking advantage of slower traffic Ron Mattern worked his way around Miesmer. In a flawless night for the Street Stocks, Mattern claimed another victory of 2014 and the chance to race the Race of Champions. With only four races left in the season Mattern leads Miesmer in track points by 12.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had Kory Wermling and Cody Kuglin coming out as the heat victors. In the feature Ron Sasek slowed on the backstretch on lap 13 bringing out the only caution in the event. Cody Kuglin got the early lead, but Zach Olson worked his way around him. Kory Wermling made a bid for Olson’s position a few times but Olson proved too strong. The bid to the Race of Champions went to Olson. However, Wermling still holds a 20 point lead over Olson with five more events in the season.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks ran caution free heats. Cody Ryan and Pacer Popham were the winners in the heats. A huge pile up coming out of turn two in the feature had Ryan, Terry Nelson, and Chuck Fleming out for the event. With two laps completed drivers restarted with Casey Steffenson in the lead. A caution for debris on lap 16 had the field closing up once again. Returning to victory lane after four weeks of mechanical issues Steffenson grabbed his bid to the RoC. Three races are left for the Super Stocks in 2014. The points race is tight with Steffenson maintaining a 9 point lead over Pacer Popham.
The IMCA Modifieds ran two heats. Joey Price took heat one and Mark Wermling grabbed heat two. After the completion of lap one Patrick Wallace spun in turns one and two bringing out the only caution of the feature. Fans cheered as David “Cherokee” Azure took the lead in the feature. Though there were some close battles for position further back in the field, Azure was unfazed. He drove a flawless race and claimed his first IMCA feature victory. The Modified points race is the closest battle at the speedway. Mark Wermling and Gary Hill have kept the points close and with three races left in the season it is sure to remain as such. Currently, Wermling maintains a 1 point lead over Hill.
